Gangrape of social activist sparks agitation

Hardwar, Apr 14 (UNI) The reported gangrape of a social activist, who along with some other women, was sitting on a dharna demanding closure of the liquor shop at Gangolihat in Pithoragarh, by some unidentified miscreants, has sparked off an agitation at many places in the Uttaranchal.

The member of the State Women Commission, Lakshmi Sharma, has reached the spot to investigate the case. However, the medical report has not confirmed rape, said the District Magistrate of Pithoragarh, Amit Negi.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered in the case and the state government has granted an economic assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh to the alleged victim of rape. The chairperson of the State Women Commission, Dr Santosh Chauhan, told UNI here the heinous crime deserved severest condemnation and most stringent punishment.

The Commission has also put the district administration in the dock for not providing adequate security to women activists.
