Cheiraoba celebrated throughout Manipur

Imphal, Apr 14 (UNI) Manipuri new year Cheiraoba was celebrated throughout the state today with splendour and gaeity.

Grand feasts were organised at every household and offers were made to the Almighty for a prosperous new year.

On the occasion, many people climbed the Cheiraoching hill after lunch to seek new heights and attain success.

Governor S S Sidhu in a message said, 'Cheiraoba', a socio-religious festival of the people of Manipur announces the arrival of a new season. It is an occasion for introspection and also for evolving new resolutions for the coming year.

Mr Sidhu said, ''We have to fight and defeat the evil designs of divisive and disruptive forces and consolidate our solidarity and harmony. The need is peace and harmony, he said and expressed confidence that people of Manipur would cut across barriers of caste, creed and religion to work for this objective.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh in a message said Cheiraoba heralds the message of love and unity. '' We celebrate Cheiraoba with religious fervour and joy. Let Cheiraoba promote better understanding, love, peace and prosperity for all of us in Manipur,'' he added.

Member of Parliament T Meinya and other dignataries wished the people on the new year.

The state government has also declared the day a holiday.
