PIL to file FIR against Meerut officers for mismanagment

New Delhi, Apr 12 (UNI) A Public Interest Litigation was today filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions to register an FIR against the officers responsible for bulldozing the bodies of the Meerut Fair fire tragedy victims.

The writ petition, filed by advocate Anil Karnwal, has also sought directions to the State of Uttar Pradesh to recover the amount of compensation from the salaries of the officials who granted permission for holding the fair, flouting all laws and safeguards and later-on mismanaged the tragedy.

More than 50 lives were lost and hundreds injured when the fire broke out in Meerut on monday.

Both, the Uttar Pradesh Government and the Centre Government have already announced compensation packages for the families of the dead as well as the injured.

The petitioner has also pleaded for framing of proper and detailed guidelines for fire safety measures to be followed throughout the country to check recurrence of such tragic incidents in the future.

The writ also prays for a high-level investigation into the fire tragedy by an independent investigative agency.

It may be noted that the State government has already announced a judicial inquiry into the incident by a sitting High Court judge.
