Clashes in eastern Sri Lanka after blast
COLOMBO, Apr 12 (Reuters) Clashes broke out in Sri Lanka's northeastern port city of Trincomalee after an explosion in a vegetable market today, officials said.
''There is an explosion. It's a hand grenade thrown into a vegetable market,'' police Deputy Inspector General Rohan Abeywardene told Reuters. He said he had no word on casualties.
''People are agitated and we are trying to control the situation.'' The unarmed Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, tasked with monitoring a strained 2002 ceasefire between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels, said their monitors had heard a blast and shooting.
