Alwar rape case accused gets 7 year jail term

Alwar, Apr 12 (UNI) A fast track court in Alwar today sentenced B H Mohanty, accused of raping a German research student, to a seven-year jail term along with penalty of Rs 10,000.

The Upper District and Sessions Magistrate (Fast Track No.1) R K Maheshwari today sentenced Mohanty for raping a German student at a hotel here on March 21. If the penalty is not submitted, the punishment can go up to one more year.

The victim had filed a complaint at the police station here on March 21 that Mohanty had raped her while he was drunk.

Mohanty, wearing a white shirt and a cream-coloured pant, was present in the court today. He seemed at ease while entering the court but looked crestfallen after the verdict, say eyewitnesses.

Mohanty's counsel were Mahaveer Prasad Jangid, Rajiv and Shailendra Bhargava.

No relatives of Mohanty were present. Neither were anybody present from the victim's side.

The verdict has come on the ninth day with the Fast Track court completing the hearings of the witnesses on April 10. The case was transfered from the Session Court to the Fast Track court on March 28. The victim had testified on March 29 and left for Germany thereafter.

The victim had testified that Mohanty, an MBA student in Delhi, whom she considered a friend, had accompanied her on the Alwar trip on March 20 for pursuing her study on ozone layer.

The victim had first SMSed her friend in Germany about the incident who in turn reported the matter to German Embassy in Delhi and the police on March 21.

The Alwar police arrested Mohanty while he was fleeing to Delhi by the Inter-city Express the next day and produced the challan in the court on March 24.

Mohanty's father is a senior police officer in Orissa.
