Govt to impose new labour laws to restrict outside workers
Aizawl, Apr 11: In a bid to curb illegal labourers coming into the state, the Mizoram government will implement two new labour laws, the inter-state migrant workmen act and contract labour act.
Talking to UNI, Commissioner for Labour and Employment T B C Rozara said strict enactment and implementation of the laws have become mandatory to curb the illegal inter-state migration of non-Mizo labourers into Mizoram.
He added that the two laws, Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970 and the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1979, laid in the last Assembly session and notification had already been released.
While explaining the new laws to be implemented shortly, the commissioner said this act would make registeration compulsory for every non-Mizo labourer entering the state besides, to obtain Inner Line Permit(ILP).
''The contractors here hiring outside workers should ensure that each labourer working under them is registered for a Work Permit under the Labour and Employment Office. The validity of the Work permit will, however, depend on that of the ILP issued to them,'' he clarified.
The Commissioner pointed out that the implementation of the new labour laws will go a long way in maintaining correct and proper identification, registration and regulation of the entire labour force within the state.
Following the implementation of the new laws, the post of Director, Labour and Employment will be redesignated as Labour Commissioner and the posts of District Employment Officers as well as Employment Officers will henceforth be redesignated as Registering Officers, he said.
