Houses for tsunami victims from Mata's Math
Chennai, Apr 11: Mata Amritanandamayi Math will construct 100 permanent shelters for tsunami victims at a cost of Rs five crore at Bambooflat in South Andaman.
A memorandum of understanding to this effect had been signed between the Math and Andaman and Nicobar administration. The math was the first NGO to make an offer to construct permanent shelters in the islands, a Math release said here yesterday.
As the islands are in high risk zone of seismic activity, the permanent shelters will be earthquake proof, besides conforming to local customs and traditions.
The math was constructing 50 twin type houses of 1,000 square feet each.
All hardware materials for construction were to be sourced from mainland and it was estimated that nearly 1,000 tonne of material would be shipped to Andaman and Nicobar islands, he added.
