Teacher killed in pre-poll violence in Asom
Guwahati, Apr 10 (UNI) One person was killed and a jawan abducted in separate pre-poll incidents in Asom, going to the second and final phase of Assembly election to 61 seats today.
A CRPF jawan, Musa Khanda Langtarpam, was kidnapped by suspected KLNLF cadres from near the Lungnite polling station under Howraghat police station of Karbi Anglong district at about 0500 hrs.
The Karbi Longri Northcachar Liberation Front (KLNLF) had given a poll boycott call in the hill district.
District Superintendent of Police Anurag Thanka rushed to the spot by a helicopter with commando forces.
In another incident, a teacher, Laitham Borgoyary, of Jainar High School of Singbargaon of Kokrajhar district, was killed in a clash between rival factions.
In separate incidents yesterday, clashes between the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Congress supporters were reported from Sootea constituency. Paramilitary forces had been deployed in the area to thwart any untoward incident.
AGP candidate from Barama constituency Prabin Boro was also reportedly threatened by unknown people last night.
The first phase of polling on April 3 had registered 73 per cent turnout with no violence reported from any of the 65 constituencies, which went to the polls.
