Rain and snow in HP; One killed
Shimla, Apr 10 (UNI) One person was killed and property estimated to be worth hundred of thousands destroyed in various districts of Himachal Pradesh last night after heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorms, lashed the lower parts, while moderate to heavy snowfall was reported from high altitude areas of the state.
Shimla Police found the body of a person, identified as Mahinder Pal, near the lift area of Shimla town early this morning and official sources said he was returning to his home last night when he was caught in severe hailstorm and heavy rains, killing him on the spot.
The body has been sent for post mortem examination and police said the cause of death would only be known after receiving the report.
Reports said the mid and lower areas of the state experienced moderate to heavy snowfall last night, causing extensive damage to the standing wheat crop at several places.
The higher altitude areas of the tribal districts of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnuar and Chamba received heavy to moderate snowfall, while heavy rains lashed the lower areas of the districts.
Patsio in Lahaul-Spiti recorded 40 cms snow, while Rontang Pass experienced about 60 cms snowfall last night and official sources said the fresh snowfall had affected the clearing of the Manali-Leh Highway.
The district deputy commissioner had cautioned people to refrain from crossing the Pass on foot due to fresh snowfall and threat of avalanches.
