New Delhi, Apr 10: While maintaining that Mrs Sonia Gandhi never held any office of profit, the Congress today said that the party President's move in resigning as MP and NAC Chairperson had "totally stumped" the opposition.

"All voices of the Opposition which created an unnecessary controversy targeting her are now silent,"Congress Spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan said.

Briefing media persons here, she said the purpose behind her resignations was merely to show that she had no"lust for power" as also to remove the ground for the unnecessary controversy created by the Opposition.

The Congress Spokesperson said the Opposition was raising no hue and cry over many persons in the Government in various States, particularly Jharkhand, holding office of profit. It is significant that the Opposition is "silent" about the others holding office of profit.

"The only one who strikes fear in the minds of the Opposition is Sonia Gandhi and that is why she was the only person targeted by the Opposition."That was why she decided to resign, Ms Natrajan added.

Asserting that Mrs Gandhi held no office of profit, Ms Natrajan said her resignations were intended to allow Parliament, which was being stalled, to function. She sidestepped the query whether Mrs Gandhi would return to the posts she had resigned from.

It was time now to redefine the 'office of profit'.It remained to be seen how the consensus emerged in Parliament, she said.
