Patna, Apr 10 (UNI) With the expiry of deadline for withdrawal of nominations, the straight contest between two stalwarts of JD(U), Mr Sharad Yadav and Mr George Fernandes for party's National President, is seemed imminent.

While Mr Yadav is party's parliamentary board president, Mr Fernandes is party's national president.

As the time for the withdrawal expired at 18:00 hrs today, both the contenders are in the fray for the coveted post.

JD(U) spokesman Shambhu Srivastav told UNI that though the nomination process was over, senior leaders of the party were persuading them for a compromise formula. They were trying to evolve a consensus over the issue, he said and hoped that either of the candidate might withdraw from the fray even before beginning of national council meeting tomorrow.

Sources close to the party said that senior leader Vashishth Narayan Singh was given a task to convince Mr Fernandes for withdrawal from the contest. However, nothing materialised so far.

The silence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the entire episode was conspicuous.

Meanwhile, a prominent group of the party revealed that Mr Kumar was in support of Mr Yadav.

Political pundits observed that the party would face problem in case Mr Fernandes loses the battle. His defeat would have a long lasting impact on the national politics.

Meanwhile, preparations for two-day national convention of the party commencing tomorrow have been given a final touch in which the elections for the post of its national president is scheduled.
