Govrnor, CM extend festival greetings

Chennai, Apr 10 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today greeted the people on the occasion of Meelad-un-Nabi and Mahaveer Jayanti.

Extending greetings and good wishes to Muslim brethren on the occasion of Meelad-un-Nabi, Mr Barnala said ''let this holy occasion, the birthday of Prophet Mohammed who preached us good conduct, rekindle the spirt of universal brotherhood and promote peace and mutual affinity.' In a separate message on Mahaveer Jayanti, the Governor said ''Lord Mahavir preached us 'ahimsa' and non-violence. Let this holy occasion rekindle the spirt of love, sympathy and kind heartedness, and promote peace and harmony.'' He also conveyed his felicitations and wishes to the followers of Jainism and to Jains in Tamil Nadu.

Ms Jayalalithaa, in her message, exhorted the people to take a pledge to foster brotherhood and promote peace and harmony on the occasion of Meelad-un-Nabi.

She also extended greeting to Muslims celebrating the birthday of Prophet Mohammed.

The Chief Minister also greeted Jains on the occasion of Mahaveer Jayanti. The world would prosper if the preachings of Mahaveer, who demonstrated to the world that triumph over one's senses was true courage, was followed, she said.
