BHEL wins Rs 1200 crore order for Lignite-based power project

New Delhi, Apr 10: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), India's largest power equipment manufacturing company, today said it has bagged an order worth Rs 1,200 crore from Gujarat Industries Power Company Ltd (GIPCL) for setting up a lignite-based power project.

The order is for for 2x125 MW expansion project at GIPCL's lignite power plant at Surat. The project will be set up on a turnkey basis.

BHEL's scope of work in the contract envisages manufacture, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of Steam Turbine Generators, Boilers, associated auxiliaries, Balance of Plant and Electricals, besides state-of-the-art Controls and Instrumentation (C&I), Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) and Switchyard including civil works.

While the Steam Turbine Generators and Boilers will be manufactured at the company's Hyderabad and Trichy plants respectively, the C&I system will be supplied by BHEL's Electronics Division in Bangalore.

The two units will be commissioned in a tight schedule of 33 and 37 months respectively by BHEL.

Earlier, BHEL had received an offer for Lignite-Based thermal Power Stations with CFBC Boilers for 2x 250 MW sets at Nevyeli and 2x125 at Barsingsar, both from NLC and 1x125 MW set at Giral from Rajasthan Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RVUNL).

In the last three years, BHEL has been able to consistently secure orders at record levels and this has resulted in comfortable order outstanding position of Rs 37,500 crore as at the end of March, 2006.

The company has reported a 70 per cent increase in net profit at Rs 1,621 crore over a record turnover of Rs 14,410 crore in 2005-06.

BHEL is also looking for acquisitions in India and abroad to obtain new technologies or products as part of a strategy to expand its global footprint.

The company is equipping itself to cater to country's ambitious future power capacity addition programmes including ultra-mega projects. It has tied up technology for 800 MW thermal sets operating with super critical parameters, besides enhancing its annual manufacturing capacity from the present 6,000 MW to 10,000 MW.
