Guwahati, Apr 10 (UNI) The newly-floated Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF), a combination of over a dozen minority political groups, occupied the spotlight in the second phase of the assembly elections today as the constituencies where polling was held are dominated by immigrant religious minority voters.

Floated in September by businessman-turned-politician and president of state Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Badaruddin Ajmal, the AUDF is poised to play spoilsport for the Congress in minority-dominated areas, spread over at least five western Asom districts, traditionally considered a Congress bastion.

The group was formed to 'teach' the ruling Congress a 'lesson' in the polls for its 'failure' to defend the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act in the Supreme Court. The Act -- a shield for minority citizens against possible harassment during detection of illegal migrants in Asom -- was struck down last July by the apex court, which termed it ''unconstitutional.'' All eyes are now on the AUDF and Mr Ajmal who is contesting from Jamunamukh and South Salmara. Mr Ajmal, considered close to the Congress, is contesting the election for the first time.

A fair performance by his party will lead to radical change in minority politics besides helping the AUDF acquire a position of strength in Asom politics.
