Thousands take part in CRPF's run for peace in Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 9 (UNI) Braving incessant rains and cold weather conditions, thousands of people, including small children, took part in 'Aman Ke Liye Daud (a run for peace)' organised by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) here today on its Valour Day.

The 6-km run was flagged off by Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Gopal Sharma from Bakshi Stadium at 0800 hrs and culminated at Lake View Golf Course on the Nishat road here.

Thousands of people from all walks of life participated in the run for peace. Hundreds of children also took part in the run despite heavy rainfall in Srinagar city and its adjoining areas since early this morning.

The CRPF orgainsed a series of programmes on the Valour Day to pay homage to its personnel who laid down their lives while protecting the unity and integrity of the country.

The Force also organised a blood donation camp and a cultural evening on the occasion.

Rupa Ganguly, who shot into the limelight after her role as Draupadi in famous epic serial Mahabharata, along with her troupe from Kolkata, performed at the cultural programme.

It was on this day in 1965 that a small contingent of CRPF's second battalion, deployed at Sardar and Tak posts in rann of Kutch in Gujarat, had repulsed the attack of full-fledged Infantry Brigade of Pakistan during operation Desert Hawk.

Eight CRPF men lost their lives in defending the country, but killed 34 Pakistani troops and captured four others alive.
