Lok Adalat for women to be held in Thane on May 1
Thane, Apr 9: More than 160 pending cases pertaining to women's issues have been registered for the Lok Adalat to be held exclusively for women on May 1, after a gap of a year.
Of these, 25 are civil cases and 65 related to Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), lodged mostly by widows. The adalat is being held as a part of a Parivarik Mahila Lok Adalat (PMLA) concept evolved by the National Commission for Women (NCW) since 1996 for redressal and speedy disposal of cases relating to marriage and family affairs.
As many as 10 panels presided by acting judges of the city civil courts will deal with the listed issues.
A spokesman of the authority said despite various efforts undertaken to reduce the number of pending cases in the courts, it was observed that pendency in the courts related to marriage and family matters was still high. Hence, the NCW evolved the concept of PMLA. Under the programme, 76 adalata have been organised so far.
The programme here has been organised by Thane District Legal Services Authority. NCW chairperson Girija Vyas and Bombay High Court Chief Justice Kshitij Vyas will be the guests on the occasion.
