Ex-Congress councillor shot

Anand, Apr 9: A former Congress councillor of the district was seriously injured when an assailant opened fire at him from a point-blank range in Juna Dadar area near the railway station here tonight, police said.

The injured, Aslam Beg Mirza, was sitting near a pan shop when an unidentified man walked upto him and opened two rounds of fire.

While one bullet missed the target, the other hit him in his stomach. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where his condition is stated to be serious.

Mirza is said to have a criminal background, police said and added the incident could be a fallout of a dispute.
