Chennai, Apr 9 (UNI)The major player and the ruling Party, the Congress, heading the coalition in the Union Territory of Pondicherry, today finalised the seat sharing agreement with the DMK.

The DMK heads the DPA in Tamil Nadu, in which Congress is a secondary player.

Mr Hariprasad, AICC General Secretary in Charge of Pondicherry, told reporters that under the seat sharing agreement, the DMK was allotted 11 seats in Pondicherry.

Of the remaining 19 seats, the Congress would like to contest 16. It had offered two seats to PMK and one to CPI, he said.

A DMK release here said the agreement was signed between DMK Pondicherry Unit Convener R V Janakiraman and PCC President P Shanmugham in the presence of DMK President M Karunanidhi, AICC General Secretary V Narayanasami and Mr Hariprasad.

In the 2001 Assembly polls in Pondicherry where the Congress was a force to reckon with, the Congress contested alone, while the DMK allied with the BJP. The AIADMK allied with the PMK and bagged three seats, while the PMK drew a blank.

As the Congress, which had emerged as the single largest party, had an alliance with the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, it formed the government with AIADMK's support.

After the political realignment before the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, AIADMK withdrew support and the DMK chipped in and was supporting the Government.
