London, Apr 5 (Reuters) Following are some of the major events to have occurred on April 6 since 1900: 1917 - The United States declared war on Germany in World War One.

1941 - Germany invaded Greece and Yugoslavia during World War Two and heavily bombed Belgrade.

1965 - Early Bird I, the world's first commercial communications satellite, was launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida. It became operational on June 28.

1968 - Pierre Trudeau became prime minister of Canada, succeeding Lester Pearson.

1991 - Iraq accepted U.N. Security Council conditions for a formal Gulf War ceasefire.

1992 - The European Community recognised Bosnia-Herzegovina as an independent state; war broke out between the Bosnian government and local Serbs, who laid siege to the capital, Sarajevo.

1994 - The presidents of Burundi and Rwanda, Cyprien Ntaryamira and Juvenal Habyarimana, were killed when a rocket downed their plane as it landed in Rwanda. The assassinations unleashed genocide in Rwanda.

1998 - Citicorp and Travelers Group Inc. announced a merger worth more than billion to create the largest corporation in the world in terms of assets.

1998 - Tammy Wynette, known as ''The First Lady of Country Music'' and famous for her hit ''Stand by Your Man'', died at the age of 55.

2000 - Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of terrorism and hijacking.

2001 - The U.N. war crimes tribunal handed a warrant demanding the handover of former President Slobodan Milosevic to Yugoslavia's justice minister.

2003 - Princess Tenagne Worq of Ethiopia, daughter of Haile Selassie, died. She was 91. According to legend, the dynasty could be traced back to centuries before Christ, to the union of the Queen of Sheba with King Solomon. It was largely unbroken from after the birth of Christ, making it one of the oldest dynasties in the world.

2004 - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, widely believed to be in Iraq, was sentenced to death in absentia by Jordan in connection with the killing of U.S. diplomat Laurence Foley in 2002.

2004 - Lithuania's parliament voted President Rolandas Paksas out of office for his links with Russian business and intelligence, making him the first European leader to be removed through impeachment.

2005 - Italy became the first founding member state of the European Union to ratify the bloc's new constitution.

2005 - Monaco's Prince Rainier III, who turned one of the world's smallest states from a faded gambling centre into a billionaires' haven, died aged 81. Europe's longest reigning monarch, he ruled the principality for nearly 55 years.

2005 - Parliament elected veteran Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani as Iraq's president, making him the first non-Arab president of any Arab state.
