Hectic political activity to halt sealing continues: 458 put to seal

Written by: Staff

New Delhi, Apr 5 (UNI) Political activity in the capital for the issuance of an ordinance to stop the sealing of shops in residential areas, as per the order of the Supreme Court, gathered momentum today with both the BJP and the Congress MLAs separately voicing the demand even as day seven of the operation saw the Municipal Corporation put 458 to seal.

Former BJP President L K Advani today sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention to stop the ongoing demolition and sealing drive in the capital and sought promulgation of an ordinance for this purpose.

In a letter to Dr Singh, Mr Advani pointed out that an alarming situation had developed in Delhi on account of the Municipal MCD using "coercive police force" for sealing shops and trading centres or razing them to the ground in the name of implementing judicial orders.

This had hit the livelihood of tens of thousands of poor and middle-class people, especially those dependent on self-employment, he said.

Holding the MCD, the Delhi Government and the Urban Development Ministry at the Centre responsible for the present situation, he said the matter would have not come to this pass if the Amnesty Plan suggested by the Vijay Kumar Malhotra Committee been accepted by the Delhi Government.

Former Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana, in the forefront of protests against the sealing of shops, today announced that he would embark on a 'Delhi Bachao Yatra' from April 8 to convince the government to come out with an Ordinance to stop the ongoing operation.

Accompanying Mr Khurana on his 'Yatra', which is also aimed at mobilising people against the current sealing and demolition drive in the metropolis, would be firebrand leader Uma Bharti.

''Uma Bharti will accompany me in the 'yatra', which will begin from Sadar on Saturday at 1600 Hours. On the first day of the yatra, we will cover the Sadar and Chandni Chowk areas,''Mr Khurana told newspersons here.

The former chief minister said he would be visiting Ayodhya on April 7 before embarking on the yatra.

''"I am going to Ayodhya to take blessings from the Lord Rama for the success of "Save Delhi Sangarsh Yatra".
