Tata Steel finishes FY'06 with a 'flourish'

Mumbai, Apr 1 (UNI) Tata Steel finished the financial year 2005-06 with numerous records on the production front with hot metal at 5.177 mt, crude steel at 4.729 mt and saleable steel at 4.52 mt.

The figures have shown an increase of 19 per cent, 15 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, as compared to those of the last financial year, a company release here said.

Apart from production records, the company pointed out that most of the units and facilities under the million tonne expansion project were commissioned during the year.

Many major milestones like crossing five-mt mark for hot metal and three-mt for hot strip mill were also achieved during the financial year.

The overall production this year is 326 ton/man/year, an increase of 21 per cent as compared to that of last year.

The raw material division continued its good performance as West Bokaro reduced the clean coal ash from 15 per cent to 13 per cent. The impact was seen in the reduction of use of imported coal from 46 per cent in FY'05 to 31 per cent in the last fiscal.

The mines division achieved the best ever iron ore production and despatch of 10.3 mt and 10.5 mt, respectively last fiscal. Most of the other divisions /departments also attained their best annual production.

The performance of marketing and sales division was dotted with many achievements like the supply of flat products to the automobile industry at 6,80,000 tones. This sales performance was supported by the 1.2 mt cold rolling mill churning out a record volume of 1.495 mt.

The profit centers of the steel company also achieved many records, with the gross turnover of tubes division surpassing the Rs 1,000 crore mark for the first time during FY'06. At 0.225 mt, the total finished production from tubes was 23 per cent higher, as compared to the figures of FY'05. The bearings division produced 28 million bearings, an increase of 12 per cent as compared to that of FY'05.
