New Delhi, Mar 31 (UNI) The process of consultation begun by the Government on enacting a comprehensive law on redefining Office of Profit -- an issue that has rocked the country's politics lately -- was expected to be over by May 10 next when Parliament reconvenes after a truncated Budget Session, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said today.

Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the Defence Investiture function held in the Rashtrapati Bhawan here, Dr Singh pointed to ''the number of ideas'' that were ''currently floating around'' and hoped ''a clearer picture'' would be ready by the time Parliament convenes following Assembly Elections in four states and the Union Territory of Pondicherry.

Also present on the occasion, Defence Minister -- and Leader of the Lok Sabha -- Pranab Mukherjee said he was writing to the leaders of various political parties seeking their views on the issue.

Almost recapitulating Parliamentary Affairs Minister -- and Cabinet spokesperson -- Priyaranjan Dasmunsi's statement to the press after a cabinet committee meeting yesterday, Mr Mukherjee denied that there was a move to prepare ''a draft legislation'' on the issue.

''The Government will decide on the next step on the basis of suggestions received from the political parties,'' Mr Mukherjee asserted.
