BSNL to take up project of feeding tv signals through its cables

Bangalore, Mar 31 (UNI) The BSNL Karnataka circle will soon provide TV signals through its cable network across the city.

An Expression of Interest had been floated for the purpose, Karnataka Telecom Circle General manager, S Ramaganapathy told newsmen here today. The project would be a joint effort and on revenue sharing basis with any agency that comes forward to provide the content, he said.

He said the quality of landline connections in the city, including fixed wireless connections will be improved over the next three months at an investment of over Rs.44 Crore. He said that the conventional paper insulated cables would be replaced by jelly filled cables at a cost of Rs.30 crore and the fixed wireless CDMA network would be revamped with 2001X latest technology. This would improve internet facilities and SMS facilities through CDMA network.

This modernisation work was being executed at a cost of Rs 14 crore and expected to be completed by June end, he said.

''On completiton of this project we would be in a position to provide all new connections and shifts within a week in both urban and rural areas of Bangalore Telecom district,'' he said.

To further imporve the landline network, BSNL had commissioned eight remote switching units in the city he said. This would help in reducing the length of the copper cable and also facilitate easy provision of Broadband connections, he said.

Broadband was another area where the growth had been very good adding that BSNL had serviced 75,000 broadband connections in the city and 15000 broadband connections in other districts of the state.

He said that his department had invested Rs 230 crore during the last financial year for the expansion of mobile network of six lakh connections in the state.

He said that the number of mobile connections at the beginning of the year was around seven lakh and this has gone up to 13 lakh now.
