Air Deccan invests Rs 5 mn USD for first hangar in Chennai
Chennai, Mar 31 (UNI) Air Deccan, the no-frills Budget Airline, will set up a world class hangar at the airport here with an initial investment of Rs five million USD.
Talking to reporters after participating in the Bhoomi puja ceremony, Air Deccan Managing Director Captain G R Gopinath said an additional five million investment would be made to further develop the first hangar facility here.
Stating that the facility would provide basic and medium-level maintenance checks and to ensure that the hangar was in line with international standards, a team of engineers from Air Deccan visited various facilities worldwide. The hangar was expected to be ready for operation in about eight to 12 months, he added.
The facility would not only strengthen the engineering infrastructure but also reduce the maintenance expenses and ensure timely availability of hangar space, he said.
The proposed hangar would augment the maintenance needs arising out of the increased number of fleet and expansion plans for Air Deccan in the coming months. The airline was also focusing on developing Chennai as a hub for their south operations. Already 36 flights and five aircraft based out of here, he informed.
Presently, the ATR checks and maintenance were carried out at a leased hangar in Hosur and major checks and maintenance on the Airbus were carried out at overseas facilities.
The Deccan aviation, the parent company of Air Deccan, was also equipped with a state-of-art hangar facility for its helicopters in Bangalore. It was also the only helicopter operator to be awarded the customer service facility status in South Asia for repair, servicing and overhaul of various models of Bell helicopters, he noted.
Capt Gopinath said the company was going for an IPO to mobilise fund for future development activities.
