Railways beats Haryana 3-0, lifts senior women's national title

New Delhi, Mar 30 (UNI) Star-studded Railways scored three goals and wasted atleast five as they blanked Haryana 3-0 to lift the NTPC 54th Senior Women's National Hockey Championship at the Shivaji Stadium here today.

The winners, who led 2-0 at the breather, scored through Saba Anjum (2nd minute), Surinder Kaur (16th) and Masira Surin (67th).

With a number of international players in the ranks, including nine from the Indian team that won silver in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Railways were red hot favourite in the match against Haryana, a side depleted after nine players left the state to represent other teams.

Railways unhinged Haryana when Saba Anjum converted their first penalty corner in the second minute and things looked even worse as Surinder Kaur increased the lead in the 16th minute.

Haryana girls put up a better show in the second half but their forward line simply did not have the firepower to breach the Railways defence.

They had their best chance when Jasjeet Kaur darted past coule of Railways eves to set up but Saravjeet Kaur fumbled and could not have a go at the Railways goal.

Masira Surin sealed the match in the 67th minute when Saba Anjum, sped past couple of Haryana players along the left flank and fed Surin who scored with a half-turn.

Earlier, Delhi overcame a one-goal deficit to beat Madhya Pradesh 2-1 to finish third.

Delhi scored through Neha Singh (15th) and Sushila Sharma (23rd) while Harjinder Kaur Kamboj was the lone goal getter for Madhya Pradesh.
