RBI to issue new Rs 500 notes

Hyderabad, Mar 29 (UNI) The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue Rs 500 denomination notes in Mahatma Gandhi series -2005 with inset letter ''E'' in both numbering panels bearing the signature of RBI governor Dr Y V Reddy.

Except for the change in the inset letter, the design of these notes to be issued was similar in all respects to the notes in Mahatma Gandhi series with additional/new security features issued on October 21, 2005.

All notes in the denomination of Rs 500 issued by the Bank in the past would continue to be legal tender.

The RBI would also issue Rs 20 denomination notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series --2005 with inset Letter ''E'' in both numbering panels bearing the signature of RBI governor Dr Y V Reddy.

Except for the change in the inset letter, the design of these notes would be similar in all respects to the bank notes issued earlier in Mahatma Gandhi series. All notes in the denomination of Rs 20 issued by the bank in the past would continue to be legal tender, a relese said here today.
