RCF employees' wives join agitation

Kapurthala, Mar 28 (UNI) The month-long agitation by the employees of the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) here today got an impetus as their wives joined them against converting the RCF into a public sector undertaking (PSU) More than one thousand women yesterday evening allegedly ransacked the office of a cable operator situated in the factory and allegedly manhandled the employees of the operator for showing interview of the RCF general manager.

Police force alongwith RPF personnel have been deployed outside the office of the cable operator as a precautionary measure.

The union leaders Brij Mohan, Sarbajit Singh and Paramjit Singh Khalsa had criticised the cable operator for broadcasting the interview in the factory.

They alleged that the GM was trying to mislead the employees and the people on the issue of PSU.

The local politicians have started using the platform of the agitating employees to exploit the situation with an eye on the state Assembly elections next year.

Political leaders from Congress, BJP, Akali Dal and BSP have addressed the gate rallies and opposed the move of Railway Minister to convert the factory into a PSU in his budget speech.

Punjab BJP chief Avinash Rai Khanna who is also MP from Hoshiarpur addressed the gate rally yesterday evening and opposed the move of the Centre to declare the factory as PSU, which was a step towards the privatisation.

Meanwhile the factory management has announcd to hold the election of the staff council, scheduled to be held on April 21 as all the staff council members had already resigned in protest against this move.

An official spokesman of the management said management was serious in solving the problems of the employees.

He expressed concern over the unrest prevailing in the factory and said that workers were not allowing the contract labourers to perform their jobs which would affect the production of coaches.

The GM today held a meeting with supervisiory staff and officers to take stock of the situation.
