Police University proposed in India
New Delhi, Mar 28 (UNI) The Union Home Ministry is seriously considering a proposal to set up a "Police University" with a view to giving an academic focus to policing and internal security issues which are emerging as major areas of concern.
"The blueprint of the proposal is ready, but the place where it is to be located is not yet decided," Home Ministry sources said here today.
However, it was pointed out that Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh is likely to be the headquarters of the "National Police University." The location of the National Police Academy in Hyderabad is considered to be an advantage for setting up the proposed university there.
If the proposal is through, it will the first police University in India.
The proposal is to use the University as a forum to generate a quality manpower that will work as a think tank for the government in matters of policing and internal security.
As things stand now, the University will be under the direct control of the Home Ministry and the fund released from its outlay.
There is also a proposal to affiliated all the existing police training institutes in different states and also the Police and Para-Military academies like the National Police Academy, CRPF Academy, BSF Academy, Internal Security Academy and the National Industry Academy.
The NPU will offer courses on various aspects of policing and security at the graduate, post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels.
Home Ministry sources pointed out that none of the 300-odd Universities offer any course dealing exhaustively on policing and international security.
The courses being offered at the three-year graduate level include: organised crime, economic crime, terrorism, investigation, cyber crime, VIP security and Law and order.
At the post-graduate level, the students will be taught police science which will cover the entire gamut of policing and emerging security scenario.
The University assumes special significance in the context of the fact that as many as 2.5 million police personnel are involved in law and order maintenance and security.
The students of the University are expected to get special weightage in all recruitment to the police, paramilitary and security forces.
One of the activities of the proposed university would be to provide training to the working police personnel.
