Mumbai, Mar 28 (UNI) In a major embarrassment, the Democratic Front (DF) government in Maharashtra today came under severe attack from its own legislators and the Opposition, who were demanding a clarification on the observations of Governor S M Krishna over allocation of region-wise funds for irrigation purpose and on the Appropriation Bill.

The Appropriation (Supplementary) Bill, 2006, was passed in the Legislative Assembly by a voice vote amid pandemonious scenes while the Opposition staged a walkout in the Council after which the bill was passed.

Opposition members in both the Houses and the ruling party members in the Assembly demanded that the Finance Minister Jayant Patil clarify the fresh directives and pre-conditions laid down by the Governor while permitting introduction of the Bill in the legislature.

Later in the evening at separate press conferences, BJP leader Gopinath Munde alongwith Leader of the Opposition in Assembly Ramdas Kadam warned that they would ''not allow the functioning of both the Houses till the government came clean on what were the pre-conditions and the directives of the Governor before he cleared the Bill.'' The North Maharashtra legislators, meanwhile, threatened to quit en masse on the issue of the cut in the fund allocation for the region from Rs 385 crore to Rs 100 crore.

Mr Suresh Jain (NCP) said the MLAs from North Maharashtra will call on the Governor tomorrow to ''seek justice.'' (Eds: pick up from earlier series) UNI MR-JM KD SC DB2115
