Jumbo drowns in river while bathing

Kottayam, Mar 28 (UNI) In a rare incident, an elephant drowned in river Muvatupuzha at Vaikom in Kottayam district of Kerala today while it was being given a bath by its mahouts.

All the efforts by the mahouts to save the 15-year-old Ayyappan, owned by Vijayan of Edavattom, failed.

The carcass was later lifted from the river, police said.
