DMK man cuts off finger protesting seat allocation
Kumbakonam, Mar 28 (UNI) A former DMK functionary today cut off his index finger because the Thiruvidaimaruthur constituency in Thanjavur district was allotted to a DMK ally, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK).
A day after DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan warned of action against those indulging in anti-party activity or violating discipline, Jayaraman, a former branch secretary, chopped off the index finger of his left hand.
He reportedly chose the index finger as it was on this finger that election officers placed the indelible mark before a person is allowed to vote. He was rushed to a private hospital here. Jayaraman had twice attempted suicide earlier by trying to burn himself, protesting against giving the seat to the PMK.
While party worker Rajan shaved his head in protest, 145 branch office bearers sent resignation letters to the DMK high command.
The grassroot workers were confident that the DMK would win the constituency if it contested and that local leader S Ramalingam would be fielded by the party.
Meanwhile, Mr Ramalingam said the constituency was allotted to the PMK as per the alliance agreement and exhorted partymen to work for the victory of the PMK candidate.
