Gangtok, Mar 28 (UNI) The Sikkim unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has reiterated its demand to make reservation in job and education for various economically backward classes in proportionate to their population.

In a memorandum to Governor V Rama Rao on March 25, the BJP alleged that the state government increased the reservation for various backward communities from earlier 50 per cent to 73 per cent without the approval of Parliament or including it in the ninth schedule of the Constitution.

The government increased the quota after declaring the Newar, Bahun and Chhettri (NBC) as OBC without the recommendation of the Backward classes Commission, members alleged.

State BJP General Secretary C B Chettri said though the quota was increased but it was not made in proportionate to their population.

Mr Chhetri said, ''For example 33 per cent reservation was made for the STs consisting of Bhutia, Lepcha, Limboo and Tamang etc even though their population constituted 40 per cent of the total population''.

He said his party suggested the Governor to initiate steps to increase the reservation to 99 per cent by providing 40 per cent reservation to the STs, 6 per cent to SCs, 23 per cent to Most Backward classes, 25 per cent to OBCs and 5 per cent to others as per their population.

Earlier in Novemember 2004, the party had also made a similar demand through a memorandum to the Governor.
