A'bad megacity policing plan cleared

Gandhingar, Mar 27: The Centre has cleared a short-term megacity policing plan (MPP) of Rs 55.29 crore to maintain law and order and control crimes in Ahmedabad, which was recently granted the megacity status.

This was announced in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly by Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah here today.

Mr Shah said the Rs 55.29 crore short-term MPP was cleared by the Central government as a part of the proposad long-term policing plan of Rs 365.24 crore for the Ahmedabad city by the Gujarat government.

He said, the MPP would cover 260 sq km area and population of 52 lakh of the first megacity of Gujarat, which is also the seventh largest city in India.

The Minister said, out of Rs 55.29 crore, the city police will acquire 904 vehicles at the cost of Rs 29.86 crore, Rs 7.89 crore will be used for setting up a computerised network and digital video cameras at police commissionerate office, Rs 2.37 crore for other equipment and Rs 15.39 crore for traffic control in the city.

The mid-term policing plan will have smart-card system, air-survelliance by helicopters, drop-gap communication system, relief and rescue equipment, traffic management system, crime control, crime detection equipment, buildings and communication system at a cost of about Rs 230.43 crore, Mr Shah added.
