Manipur MLAs demand law on disaster managment
Imphal, Mar 25 (UNI) Cutting across party lines, MLAs of Manipur Assembly today decided to jointly urge the government to adopt a Bill on disaster management.
The speakers on the first ever seminar organised by the Manipur Legislative Assembly suggested adoption of a Bill on natural disaster managment.
Experts from the Manipur University and officials of the state government also participated in the seminar.
Dr Maniruddin Shaikh said the Center has brought about a shift in the approach to disaster management based on the concept that investments in mitigation was better than rehabilitation.
The Centre has also directed all states to set up specialised centres at district level and introduce disaster management in school curriculum. The northeast is vulnerable to natural hazards, he said.
He reminded it was the duty of the government to protect life and property.
Experts from the Manipur University said north eastern India was highly vulnerable to earthquakes and floods and there was on urgent need to sensitise people about it.
