Manipur mlas demand law on disaster managment
Imphal, Mar 25 (UNI) Cutting across party lines, the mlas of Manipur assembly today decided to jointly urge the government to adopt a bill on the disaster management.
The speakers on the first ever seminar organised by the Manipur Legislative Assembly suggested for adoption of a bill on the natural disaster managment.
Experts of Manipur University and officials of the state government also took part in the seminar.
The speaker, Dr Maniruddin Shaikh, said the Union government has brought about a shift in the approach to disaster management based on the concept that investments in mitigation was better than rehabilitation.
The Centre has also directed all states to set up specialised centres at district level and introduce disaster management in school curriculum. The northeast was vulnerable to natural hazards, he said. He reminded that it was the duty of the government to protect life and property.
Experts from the Manipur University said the north eastern India was highly vulnerable to earthquake and flood and there was strong need to sensitise the people about it.
