Jammu, Mar 25: Jammu and Kashmir CPI(M) has hailed the peace treaty offered by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Pakistan as a ''historical step''.

The party's state committee also appreciated the ''positive response'' from the Pakistani leadership in this regard.

Senior CPM leader Bashir Ahmed said in a statement the long lasting agreement of peace, tranquility and friendship would ''provide meaning to the quest for a peaceful future.'' Mr Ahmed further said, the resolution of outstanding issues between the two countries was possible only when the political leadership of two countries firmly resolve to leave behind the past and think in terms of a shared and common future.

''The Indo-Pak leadership has to be flexible enough to genuinely accommodate each other for a better and prosperous South Asia as this could be the turning point in the bilateral relation between two countries,'' he added.
