Veteran freedom fighter Gopal Shastri dies

New Delhi, Mar 24 (UNI) Veteran freedom fighter and social activist S Gopal Shastri died today after a brief illness.

He was 84.

Mr Shastri started his career as a journalist and got involved in the country's freedom movement as a youth in Bihar.

He was jailed during the Quit India movement in 1942.

Mr Shastri was also instrumental in setting up the All India Youth Congress, of which he became the first President in 1950.

Though he was born in Bihar, he remained in touch with his roots in Karnataka, and helped establish institutions like Delhi Kannada School and Delhi Kannada Sangh after he settled in the capital.

He is survived by his wife and four children.
