Berhampur, Mar 24 (UNI) Armed Naxalites today took over the small town of R Udayagiri and went on a rampage killing two constables, releasing all inmates of R Udayagiri sub-jail by bombing it and kidnapping two senior officials after ransacking several official buildings in a three-hour operation.

Over 70 armed ultras, 30 of them women, wearing 'khaki uniform', came to the town in two mini trucks in the wee hours and attacked the police station killing two constables and injuring as many.

They then bombed the R Udayagiri sub-jail and freed all the inmates as the panic-stricken staff opened the main gate soon after the attack.

The ultras kidnapped the R Udayagiri police station officer-in- charge Ranjan Mallick and Sub-Jail Superintendent Rabindra Narayan Sethi, ransacked the tehsil building, an Inspection Bungalow and damaged a BSNL tower before fleeing the town.

Gajapati District Collector Binod Behari Mohanty, who was camping in the Inspection Bungalow, fled from the scene and hid in a block quarter when the Naxalites approached him. On not finding him the ultras ransacked the bungalow.

Mr Mohanty said the heavily armed Naxalites snapped telephone and electricity connections, blocked the entry points to the town to prevent the force from countering their attack and then went on a rampage for three hours.

They also attacked the treasury and looted arms and ammunition from the police station before leaving in two trucks shouting 'Maoists zindabad'.

Eds here pick up suitably from earlier series.
