K'taka to enforce Kannada in English medium schools

Bangalore, Mar 24: The Karnataka Government will initiate stringent action against English medium schools failing to teach Kannada as a subject at the lower primary level from the academic year 2006-07, Primary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti informed the Legislative Council today (Mar 24, 2006).

Replying to a query from Maritibbegowda (Congress) on behalf of Mr M Krishnappa during the question hour, he said the government would hold the Education Department officials responsible for any failure in implementing the language policy from first standard to fifth standard from the academic year.

He said the government would strictly enforce the implementation of the language policy and cancel the affiliation given to those schools that fail to comply.

Mr Horatti said the government would also take suitable action to get vacated the status quo order given by the Karnataka High Court in the case filed by the Associated Management of Recognised Unadided English Medium Schools, challenging the move to make teaching of Kannada as a subject compulsory at the lower primary level in English medium schools.
