MELBOURNE, Mar 24 (Reuters) Kenya's Janeth Jepkosgei produced a spirited late sprint to take gold in the women's 800 metres as Maria Mutola failed in her bid to win a third straight Commonwealth Games title today.
Jamaican Kenia Sinclair pushed Mozambique's Mutola hard for most of the race as the pair ran at the head of the field before Jepkosgei timed her run to perfection, starting her sprint about 70 metres from home.
Jepkosgei finished in one minute 57.88 seconds, 0.06 outside her previous best, to win the gold medal.
Sinclair finished second in 1:58.16 while Sydney 2000 Olympics and seven-time world indoor champion Mutola took the bronze in 1:58.77.
