Blast hits Sunni mosque in Iraq, casualties feared

BAGHDAD, Mar 24 (Reuters) A bomb planted near the entrance to a Sunni mosque in a town northeast of Baghdad exploded as worshippers were leaving midday prayers today, and police said casualties were feared.

Police said they had no firm casualty figure from the blast at the Sa'ad bin Abiwakkas mosque in the town of Khalis.

A number of Sunni mosques have been targeted in sectarian attacks since the February. 22 bombing of a major Shi'ite mosque in Samarra unleashed a wave of violence that pushed Iraq towards the edge of civil war.
