Barrackpore, Mar 24: An electoral officer going through the voters' list in a West Bengal assembly constituency was amazed to find as many as 450 people claiming to be children of one Ananda Thakur.
Election observer Sudhir Kumar was perusing the electoral lists of Karhati constituency in North 24 Parganas when he found that 450 men and women had mentioned the late Ananda Thakur as their father. The constituency is at present represented by a CPI(M) MLA.
As the dumbstruck observer visited the address in the list, the mystery was solved. The voters were residents of an old age and distressed people's home run by the Adyapith Temple Ashram at Ariadhah near Dakshineshwar.
During an inquiry into such impractical enrolment of electorate, the Adyapith's monk secretary Mural Bhai explained that the people who were provided shelter preferred to live here permanently as disciples and children of the founder father of the organisation, monk Ananda Thakur, who died in 1961.
The election observer, after checking their nationality, preferred to maintain the list.
