Service Tax evasion worth several crores unearthed

Kanpur, Mar 22 (UNI) Service tax (ST) evasion to the tune of several crores of rupees has been detected following raids by the customs and excise department sleuths at the residences and official premises of Kanpur's five prominent builders.

According to sources, 17 teams conducted the raids simultaneously yesterday in Civil Lines, Tilak Nagar, Aryanagar and Swaroopnagar areas.

However, officials refused to disclose the exact tax evasion amount. A leading builder claimed they did not come under the purview of service tax.

However, an official spokesman maintained the raids were well under their jurisdiction.
