Bangalore, Mar 22 (UNI) The Karnataka Government is planning to bring in suitable amendments to the Karnataka Land Revenue Act to curb land grabbing in and around the city, Revenue Minister Jagdish Shettar informed the Legislative Council today.

Replying to a query from 'Mukhyamantri' Chandru, he said the amendment would provide for punishing the offenders with seven years imprisonment and a fine. The Government had surveyed and identified 4,520 acres of land encroached upon by the land mafia in five taluks around the city in the last several years.

Conceding the members' demand, the Minister assured that the names of those involved in the land scam would be publicised.

While Leader of the Opposition in the Council H K Patil demanded that a Joint House Commiitte be constituted to probe the scam, Mr Chandru demanded a white paper on the issue.

Mr Basavaraj Bommai (JD-U) demanded that the inquiry be started from former Chief Ministers and their relatives as most of those involved were influential people.
