HDC complains of slow progress of road work

Imphal, Mar 22 (UNI) The Highway Development Council(HDC) formed by civil organisations of Manipur has complained of progress of road work on NH-53 as assured by the Central and state governments.

The two national highways in Manipur, NH-39 and NH-53 are in a deplorable condition.

NH-39, which passes through Nagaland is the only highway which connects Manipur to the outside world. However, due to frequent blockades on the road, specially after a two-month blockade called by the All Naga Students Association, Manipur, the Central and state government had decided to make NH-53 motorable.

Governor of Manipur Dr S S Sidhu had himself gone to inspect the condition of the highway. The HDC Convenor Ratan said the Governor was informed about the slow progress of work.

The HDC further said the BRTF officials had assured of completing the work within two months.

The HDC felt that work would be hampered during the monsoons. Most bridges on NH-53 are wooden bridges which cannot support heavy vehicles.
