Don't prorogue Parliament, forward complaint against Sonia: TDP

Written by: Staff

New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) Describing as ''unethical'' the government's move to have the Budget session of Parliament prorogued, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today urged President A P J Abdul Kalam not to accept the recommendation and forward to the Election Commission the party's petition seeking disqualification of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and three other MPs.

The two Houses of Parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, were adjourned sine die today amid speculation that the move was aimed at having an ordinance promulgated to remove certain posts from the list of offices of profit and thus pre-empt disqualification of a number of MPs.

''The government's decision to prorogue Parliament is unethical.

What is going on behind the scene is very clear. It is to protect an individual from getting disqualified,'' TDP Parliamentary party leader Yerran Naidu said.

''The Hon'ble President should not accept the decision to prorogue the two Houses,'' which were to adjourn today to reconvene on May 10 to transact pending business of the Budget session.

The President should also immediately forward to the Election Commission the TDP's petitition seeking disqualification of Ms Gandhi, Dr Karan Singh, Dr Subbarami Reddy and Dr Kapila Vatsyayan as members of Parliament for holding offices of profit in violation of Article 102 and 103 of the Constitution, he said.

While Samajwadi Party's Rajya Sabha MP, Ms Jaya Bachchan, has already been disqualified for holding the post of the UP Film Development Council, the President has forwarded a similar complaint against SP General Secretary Amar Singh.

According to official sources, the complaints against SP MPs have opened the floodgates for petitions seeking disqualification of over 40 MPs.

The opposition stalled the proceedings of Parliament today to protest against the reported government move to have an ordinance issued.

The adjournment of Parliament sine die had given further credence to the report over the ordinance.
