Shillong, Mar 21 (UNI) NCP leader and MP from Tura Purno A Sangma today said he proposed ''two-tier adjustments''among the like minded parties in Asom to defeat the Congress in the Assembly elections due early next month.

Mr Sangma, the nine-time MP from Tura, addressing a press conference here, sought to bring home the point that a proper alliance in the election-bound Assam could not be possible because of differences between Brindaban Goswami-led Asom Gana Parishad and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta-led AGP (Progressive).

He, however, said a unique two-tier adjustment could be forged in which newly formed UDF and AGP would have seat adjustment besides an understanding between the NCP and AGP(P).

Referring to the last Tura by-election which he won by more than one lakh votes defeating his nearest rival Dr Mukul Manda Sangma of congress, he said it was proved that ''people do not accept any violence...the people outright rejected the September 30 firing in Garo that left nine mostly students killed''.

Expressing concern over the use of money and muscle power in the Tura poll, he said even the church leaders were alarmed by the trend and praised the people is role in the last elections.

He said he made a record of sorts by winning nine straight elections from Tura LS seat in the country except for a similar feat by LS Speaker Somnath Chaterjee and late P M Sayeed. But both of them had lost one election each.

He said Meghalaya showed to the entire country the concept of power sharing when in 1979, B B Lyngdoh and Capt W A Sangma had agreed to share power in the state.

He said it was much later followed in Jammu and Kashmir and in Germany also the same formula was worked out with success.
