Vijayawada, Mar 21 (UNI) The Supreme Court Empowered Committee (SCEC) has passed orders to dismantle the fish tanks in Krishna District, District Collector Navin Mittal said today.

The situation would be revicwed at Kolleru before ensuring dismantling of tanks, he added while talking to UNI here.

Mr Mittal said the administration had already carried out demolishing of 25 tanks, spread over more than 100 acres in the district and eight more will be dismantled before the deadline fixed by the Committee.

The Committee reportedly passed orders to the Collectors of Krishna and West Godavari districts to finish the dismantling of big tanks within 15 days and small tanks by May 31.

In the Committee meeting held in Hyderabad on March 11, members from various political parties and oganisations had expressed apprehensions that the demolition of tanks would hit the livelihood of people, who were dependent on fishing activity.

They urged the Committee to apprise the apex court of the ground reality as the demolition of tanks would have a cascading effect on the fishing community.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary K Narayana lauded the Committee's decision to continue with the Kolleru operation.
