Kenyan Wangui wins 10,000 metres
MELBOURNE, Mar 21 (Reuters) Lucy Wangui snatched the women's 10,000 metres Commonwealth Games gold medal with a late charge as unheralded Kenyans filled the top two places today.
Wangui and Evelyne Wambui dominated the race from the front, challenging the other runners to keep up with them over the gruelling distance and building a lead of about 50 metres over the final two laps.
Teenager Wambui looked set to take the gold as she led around the final bend before Wangui, who celebrates her 23rd birthday in three days, sprinted clear about 50 metres from the line to finish in 31 minutes 29.66 seconds.
Wambui took silver in a time of 31.30:86. England's Mara Yamauchi claimed the bronze in 31:49.40.
