Gujarat Govt postpones auction of farmland

Written by: Staff

Surat, Mar 21 (UNI) The Gujarat government today indefinitely postponed the auction sale of 6.5 acre farmland that belongs to the renowned Cotton Research Centre of Navasari Agricultural University here.

Earlier, the Congress-supported Surat District Farmers' Association had alleged that the state government was planning to sell the land to a non-resident businessman to start a hotel. The issue rocked the State Assembly and the government decided to auction the land by inviting tenders.

The auction was supposed to take place today.

Meanwhile, Karsen Patel, leader of Farmers' Association, had said they will approach the court against the selling of the land.

But no case has been filed till now.

The farmland on which the research centre is operating is situated in the heart of the city, and is one of the prestigious research institutions in the country, according to the scientists working in the unit.
